Bomb Cyclone

This is a radar picture of the 'bomb cyclone' I screen shotted off of my phone during the event. I thought it was fascinating because it was simply...a frozen hurricane! Bomb Cyclone! Wow! That does sound intimidating doesn't it? Where do they come up with these names?! Well, they really are real terms that meteorologists use. A bomb cyclone is an area of incredibly low pressure, like in a hurricane, that just explodes quickly and out of nowhere. It brings about just the same weather disturbances as a hurricane - flooding, winds, high tides, etc. The above happened in January 2018 and it brought record tides, huge flooding and winds up to 80mph! Bomb cyclones have been around for quite a while so they aren't new and certainly not as scary as they sound. So why try and scare us? Americans have a tendency to take weather for granted. They are very blasé about severe weather. Weather reports are given for a variety of reasons, but one is to warn folks about the dangers that are approaching in time to prepare and save lives and property. A hurricane does not care who it tramples on. Terms like 'polar vortex' and 'bomb cyclone' put people in action much affectively than 'cold polar air' and 'low pressure system'. So yes, there is such a thing as a 'bomb cyclone' and weather people effectively us 'click bait', but not as a way to get one over on us. They use it to help us, keep us safe, and protect our homes. Thanks guys!

Groundhog Day

2 February. It's Groundhog Day. This tradition goes back many centuries to when folks use to celebrate Candlemas Day. On this day, priests would bless candles and hand them out almost as a middle point of Winter. This is also about the time certain animals, groundhogs being among them, would come out of their holes to check the weather. If they saw their shadow they would return to their holes for 6 more weeks. The Romans, who used hedgehogs, brought this tradition to the Germans. The earliest settlers in Pennsylvania were German and since groundhogs kinda resembled hedgehogs decided that they would do in a pinch.

So I was at work the other day and the media specialist I work with asked me if I had read this book titled "One World, One Day". It was a nonfiction picture book so I read it quickly. It goes through a whole day, but through various countries.

The book was simple yet poignant. We all go through each day...together...yet in different ways. There is no better time in history to understand this concept than right now.

There is so much hate. There is so much violence. There is so much misunderstanding. There is so much negativity.

There is so much life. There is so much beauty. There is so much love. There is so much hope.

That is what Traciecam needs to be about.

Connecting the world through pictures, words, experiences...

and really getting to know each other and understanding how our lives are truly similar.

One world, one day.

I like it.
